While large companies have built internal specialist teams and relationships with major national initiatives to solve this problem, SMEs can struggle to access consented patient data.
We can help:
- find data for R&D projects
- set up contracts, MTAs, DTAs etc with data owners
- find or develop informatics tools and resources to access, link or use data
- work on national policy questions around access to data
Signposting and connecting
We have developed a strong understanding of the UK-wide capabilities in medicines discovery, so we can help you find the right partner or supplier that can deliver what you need. And we won’t charge for doing so.
Contracted fee-for-service projects
If we work together on a project that requires significant input from us, we’ll need to charge you for any costs incurred (due to state aid rules) – we’ll agree this upfront before starting the work.
“Medicines Discovery Catapult has been very helpful in guiding our data access strategy and introducing us to key opinion leaders with interesting data sets. Their team has provided excellent support in accessing UK Biobank data, both at the drafting and material transfer agreement stages, and we are very impressed with their speed of responsiveness and extensive network of contacts in the life sciences sector.”
Dr Véronique Bouchet, Chief Medical Officer, RowAnalytics
“Medicines Discovery Catapult’s efforts were extremely helpful and the national and international connections we have made through them with key opinion leaders and data holders have been very beneficial. Many of our research questions have been answered by the studies they located and by talking in depth with these academic groups. The data access process can be a barrier to trying small simple things, but working with Medicines Discovery Catapult and the key opinion leaders enabled us to save time by framing our research questions correctly”

The Health Data Finder for Research is the NHS online guide to healthcare research datasets, giving details of the data fields available via NHS Digital (hospital data), Public Health England (cancer registry data), CPRD (primary care data), and NIHR HIC (disease specific datasets in acute coronary syndromes, critical care, renal transplantation, viral hepatitis, ovarian cancer).
It describes who collects the data, where, since when, and the number of patient events included. The full data models are available online in the metadata catalogue. The HDF provides contacts to the relevant data custodian for each dataset, as well as online guidance for requesting data.
We can provide supported, direct access to these datasets for SMEs.
