Mark Wigglesworth joined the MDC-led COVID-19 screening project as a volunteer at the beginning of the pandemic. He played a pivotal part in establishing the first screening activities and the laboratory infrastructure. He went on to become the Site Director in July 2020, expanding the organisation to more than 700 FTE, recruiting an industry-leading management team and building a sustainable organisation.
Prior to this Mark has spent more than 20 years in the pharmaceutical industry leading groups responsible for AstraZeneca’s Global High Throughput Screening capability and GlaxoSmithKline’s European Sample Management. During this time he has established himself as both a business leader and innovator, delivering technology developments as part of AstraZeneca’s creation of a new screening centre, initiating compound exchange activities across pharma valued at more than £250M, while driving basic scientific research through substantial academic collaborations. Mark has been part of leadership teams spanning collaborations with the Medical Research Council, Charles River Laboratories, Cancer Research UK, the European Laboratory Research and Innovation Group, Imperial College BioDesign Engineering Industry Advisory Board, Bionow, the recently awarded Infection Innovation Consortium (iiCON) and the UK governments Lighthouse Laboratory Test and Trace network.
Sarah has over 20 years’ experience in life and medical sciences. She joined the MDC-Lighthouse Laboratory in September 2020 as Chief of Staff. In this role she supports our significant staff base, driving strategic change and growth, communications, culture and engagement.
She has a PhD in cell biology and spent her early career in research roles at Syngenta then AstraZeneca before moving into research and project management. She has extensive experience in research funding, securing and managing significant grants, developing strategy and establishing successful collaborations, gained in a variety of sectors including charity, the NHS and academia. She played a pivotal role at the University of Manchester in securing funding for the International Alliance for Early Detection (ACED) Centre of Excellence (£3.2m) and the RadNet Radiation Research Unit (£16.5m) from Cancer Research UK and implementing these awards. Most recently, Sarah worked at Manchester Cancer Research Centre as interim Director of Research Operations and Strategy.
Simon Chapman joined the MDC-Lighthouse Laboratory in September 2020 and lead the laboratory in its transition from volunteers to a large staffed diagnostic testing centre. Using innovation, continuous improvement and a focus on staff training, he has taken the lab to a current capacity of 80,000 samples per day. Managing a rapidly expanding workforce, currently at 700 staff members, ensuring that structure is in place to allow for staff development, whilst delivering a high-quality service that has recently been recognised by obtaining UKAS ISO 15189 accreditation.
Prior to the pandemic, Simon has a background in both NHS and commercial pathology lab management. Using his experience in a wide variety of disciplines, including Biochemistry, Haematology, Blood Transfusion, Molecular Biology and Virology, he has been able to implement and manage a wide diverse workforce. Working with SYNLAB as both a laboratory manager and an implementation expert he delivered numerous improvements projects across the South East and Nationwide. Mostly combining NHS and Private sector to deliver services that ensured profit on both sides. Which culminated in helping to secure, through tender, the largest pathology contract in the UK at £4.3 billion.
Roz is a CIMA qualified finance professional with extensive Senior Leadership experience gained in a wide variety of environments including PE-backed businesses, not-for-profit organisations and the NHS.
Roz joined the MDC Lighthouse Lab in June 2020 and, as Head of Finance, has supported the organisation through a period of huge growth, building a team capable of adapting to the ever-changing requirements of the Lab and ensuring robust financial control.
Justine Williams joined the MDC-Lighthouse Lab in June 2020 as the Head of Human Resources. In this role she has been responsible for the recruitment of over 800 staff, setting up the HR function, establishing HR polices and processes and the training and development of the workforce.
Justine is a CIPD qualified senior HR professional with over 30 years’ experience within commercial and not-for-profit organisations. She possesses an extensive strategic and generalist HR background with a clear track record of delivering targeted interventions to drive organisational and individual performance. With exceptional change management, TUPE and Organisational Development skills within large unionised environments.
Harry has been in the diagnostics sector for over 25 years. He joined the Lighthouse Lab in August 2020 as Head of Innovation and Technology.
He has had a number of senior commercial and operational roles with a range of biotech companies operating internationally. He started his career in the NHS as a Clinical Scientist in molecular diagnostics and then moved into Sales Management with Whatman (now part of GE) before moving into Project Management with DxS (now part of Qiagen). He then became an Operational Director of an Imperial College London led organisation, London Genetics, before becoming a Commercial Director and part of the Senior Management team at an SME offering contract IVD development and manufacturing services. Harry is also the Director at HS BioLabs, a molecular diagnostics European distributor.
With a blend of operational and commercial experience, Harry has helped companies develop systems and processes as well as significantly grow revenues.
