Medicines Discovery Catapult (MDC) has published its first Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Report, covering the period of October 2023 to September 2024.
MDC reshapes drug discovery for patient benefit, by transforming great UK science into better treatments, through partnership. The organisation delivers positive impact in its role as a national Life Sciences service and is committed to acting in a safe and responsible way whilst doing so.
ESG is a set of practices used to evaluate a company’s operational performance as it relates to social and environmental impact and the way in which it makes decisions and manages its information. It deals with impact on planet and people, both internally and across wider stakeholder networks.
MDC set out its sustainability intentions with the publication of its ESG Strategy in 2023. This report marks one year of progress, showcasing activities from across its environmental, social and governance portfolios, including:
- MDC’s participation in a global energy-saving competition for laboratories, and placing in the top 20% of participants in its first year
- Highlighting the importance of role models in STEM careers, through a suite of activities for International Day of Women and Girls in Science, British Science Week, and its on-going schools programmes
- Achieving Stage 1 of working towards ISO 45001, an international standard for health and safety. The accreditation has since been fully achieved.
Robert Sherville-Payne, General Counsel and Executive Lead of Medicines Discovery Catapult’s ESG Programme, said:
“It is pleasing to share the genuine progress in the delivery of our ESG goals through this report, whilst driving sector impact and deploying our unique blend of discovery expertise, technology, insights, and sector-leading partnerships.
“As a values-driven organisation, how we work matters, just as much as what we do. We remain committed to protecting our environment, to our social responsibilities to ourselves and our community, and to ensuring we govern ourselves safely and responsibly on behalf of all of our stakeholders.
“MDC is committed to building on our ESG approach and publishing our progress, to ensure we can deliver more sustainable, higher impact across our sector.”
